Tattoo Aftercare 101: The First 30 Days

Cuidado del tatuaje: los primeros 30 días

A tattoo is a wound before it’s art. How it heals in the first month decides how it looks for the next fifty years.

Day 1: it’s a wound, treat it like one

Día 1: es una herida, trátala como tal

Redness, slight swelling and a bit of ooze (plasma and excess ink) are normal on day one. Whatever wrap your artist used, follow their instructions exactly — there is more than one correct method, and mixing them causes problems.

Days 2–14: the itchy, flaky part

The skin tightens like a sunburn, then starts to peel. This is the stage most people panic at — coloured flakes come off, and it looks like the tattoo is fading. It isn’t. That’s dead skin, not ink. Never pick or scratch it; pulling a scab pulls pigment out with it and leaves a permanent light patch.

Weeks 3–4: the milky stage

Semanas 3–4: la etapa lechosa

A cloudy, slightly dull look right before the tattoo settles is completely normal — a thin new layer of skin sits over the ink and clears on its own. Don’t exfoliate to “fix” it.

The short list that actually matters

La lista corta que realmente importa

  • Wash with clean hands and fragrance-free antibacterial soap, 2–3 times a day.
  • Moisturize thin — the skin should look matte, not shiny.
  • No pools, baths, or direct sun until fully healed.
  • SPF 30+ on the tattoo for life once healed — sun is what fades ink over the years.
